Fire extinguishing modules with pressure generator (MPGD)

The ways to overcome the identified problems lie in the development of an explosion-resistant foam fire extinguishing installation, increasing the speed / intensity of foam supply to the fire site (foam attack), as well as imparting new properties to the fire extinguishing agent. All this will make it possible to compensate for the complex processes of burning oil products in tanks and reduce the destruction of foam when it enters the combustion zone of oil products.

A similar technology was developed at the beginning of the 21st century. This led to the emergence of pulsed fire extinguishing installations (IPS), based on solid fuel aerosol generators for supplying self-foaming gas-aerosol-filled foam to the fire. Self-foaming gas-aerosol-filled foam is a combined fire extinguishing agent, which is a foam, the bubbles of which are filled with a mixture of gases (nitrogen, carbon dioxide) and contain micron-sized potassium ions, which actively inhibit combustion.

Foam is formed by desorption of gases in the mixture (similar to opening a soda bottle) due to pressure difference (between mixture pressure and atmospheric pressure). Thus, the new extinguishing technology combines several types of fire extinguishing agents — foam, gas, aerosol and film-forming agent.

MPGD are designed to extinguish fires of classes A (combustion of solid substances) and B (combustion of liquid substances) OTV based on water and aqueous solutions filled with a mixture of gases and various pressure inhibitors obtained during the operation of pressure generators based on solid fuel AFC. System are used as part of water and foam fire extinguishing installations for fire protection of premises, structures and process equipment.

MPGD fire extinguishing modules can be used both stationary and on movable chassis or mobile equipment and do not require a water source — it is a completely self-contained and independent product that can act as a keeper of a foam concentrate solution or a water feeder. The applied technology for obtaining self-foaming gas-aerosol-filled foam allows the use of any foam concentrates.

The main reasons for the inefficiency of technical solutions used to protect oil and oil products warehouses from the point of view are:

  • destruction of foam generators at the initial stage of a fire during the explosion of a gas-air mixture formed under the roof of the tank;
  • strong heating of the tank walls during a developed fire, which contributes to the long-term burning of oil products at the side of the tank;
  • the formation of a convective column during the combustion of petroleum products, which prevents the flow of foam to the entire area of the burning surface;
  • intensive destruction of foam at high temperature;
  • strong heating of the upper layer of the burning oil product, which makes it difficult for the foam to flow into the combustion zone;
  • when the oil contains alcohols, the underlayer extinguishing technique leads to the dissolution of the foam in the oil, i.e. destruction of fire extinguishing agent (OTV).
